VPN Protocols Explained

By DexterVPN Editorial Team

VPN protocols are the rule sets and cryptography used to build your encrypted tunnel. WireGuard prioritizes simplicity and speed, OpenVPN offers mature UDP/TCP flexibility, and IKEv2/IPsec excels at mobile reconnects. Your app should let you switch when one protocol is blocked or slow.

Quick comparison

ProtocolBest forWatch out for
WireGuardEveryday speed on open networksUDP blocking on strict Wi-Fi
OpenVPNFallback with TCP on filtered networksHigher overhead on some devices
IKEv2/IPsecPhones switching Wi-Fi ↔ cellularCorporate firewalls may block it

DexterVPN protocol support

DexterVPN lists WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 among planned supported protocols across compatible apps. Availability per platform will be confirmed at launch. DexterVPN is not yet publicly available — no download exists today.

Frequently asked questions
