What changes with a VPN enabled
- Your ISP typically sees an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server, not individual page URLs inside the tunnel
- Websites see the VPN server's IP address instead of your home IP
- Local network operators on public Wi-Fi see encrypted VPN traffic rather than plain HTTP
What does not change
- Cookies and account logins still identify you to sites you authenticate with
- Malware, phishing and unsafe downloads remain risks
- Your VPN provider can see traffic unless additional measures (such as HTTPS everywhere) are used
